An American's Love Affair with Greece
I'm Scott Murray — an American travel writer who fell in love with Greece on my first visit and never looked back. From the ancient Acropolis of Athens to the whitewashed cliffs of Santorini, from the floating monasteries of Meteora to the turquoise waters of the Ionian coast, I've spent years exploring every corner of this extraordinary country. Discovering Greece is the travel guide I wished existed when I first arrived — honest, detailed, and built on real experience rather than recycled listicles.
Travel has always been my escape from the everyday — and honestly, I enjoy the planning almost as much as being there. Researching destinations, mapping ferry routes, finding that perfect taverna tucked down a narrow alley. My first trip to Greece changed everything. I stepped off the plane in Athens, walked up to the Acropolis in the golden afternoon light, and knew this country was going to become a major part of my life.
Since that first visit, I've returned again and again — island-hopping through the Cyclades, watching the sunset from Santorini's caldera, eating my way through Thessaloniki's markets, hiking the Samaria Gorge in Crete, and discovering the quieter corners of Naxos, Hydra, and the Peloponnese that most tourists never see. Each trip goes deeper. Each island reveals something new.
I'm not a traditional travel blogger. I work in healthcare IT. But Greece keeps pulling me back, and I finally decided to put everything I've learned into something useful — a site with real knowledge, honest prices, video content from the places I've actually been, and an AI trip planner that builds itineraries from years of real experience. Discovering Greece is the resource I wished existed when I first started planning trips here. It just took this long to figure out how to build it.
How Greece Became an Obsession
My first trip to Greece. Climbing up to the Acropolis in the warm afternoon light, looking out over the sprawling city toward the sea, eating the best souvlaki of my life at a tiny place in the Plaka. Just like that, Greece became a part of me. The obsession began.
Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes. Each trip went deeper — Naxos' mountain villages, the Peloponnese's ancient theaters, Thessaloniki's Byzantine churches. 40+ countries of travel, but Greece has always been the first love. The planning became almost as enjoyable as the trips themselves.
Hydra, Sifnos, Milos, Ikaria. The Mani Peninsula's tower villages and the olive groves of Kalamata. Each visit revealed a different Greece — one that tourist brochures completely ignore. The notebook of tips and recommendations grew thicker every trip.
I started documenting everything — video from harbors, tavernas, coastal ferry rides, and ancient ruins. The idea crystallized: why does no Greece travel site show you what these places actually look and feel like? The dream of a proper travel resource took shape.
The site I'd been dreaming about for years finally became real — with video content, an AI trip planner, and years of personal experience powering every recommendation. Not a side hustle with recycled content. A real guide built by someone who genuinely loves this country.
The Person Behind the Pages
Healthcare IT professional by day, Greece travel obsessive by every other waking moment. Based in San Diego, California. What started as a single trip to Athens sparked a deep love for Greek culture, cuisine, and way of life. Multiple return trips across the mainland and islands — from Meteora to Crete. 40+ countries of travel, but Greece has always been the first love. Enjoys the trip planning almost as much as the travel itself.
What You'll Never Find Here
I built this site because I got tired of Greece travel content that's secretly a press trip recap or a sponsored hotel review dressed up as honest advice. Discovering Greece exists because I wanted the resource I wished I had when I first started planning trips here.

More Than a Travel Blog
Discovering Greece isn't a collection of "Top 10" listicles. It's a living resource built on years of real experience, genuine passion, and technology that actually helps you plan a better trip. Here's what makes it different:
- Video guides for select destinations — see the harbors, tavernas, and coastlines before you book
- An AI trip planner that builds custom itineraries with real prices, not hallucinated estimates
- Every price listed in both EUR and USD, updated regularly based on what I actually pay
- Deep regional coverage — not just Athens and Santorini, but the quieter islands most travelers miss
